Interindividual variability of skull conductivity: an EEG-MEG analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
Source localizations based on EEG and MEG show different accuracies. One of the major differences between EEG and MEG localization is that the former depends on electrical tissue conductivities. It is hypothesized that an incorrect assumption of the skull conductivity value is a major contributor to EEG inaccuracy. In a simulation study, it is shown that assuming single skull conductivity for a population of subjects that show a realistic inter-individual variability for this value EEG localization inaccuracy is mainly in the direction between source and skull. This is confirmed by a re-analysis of EEG-MEG data obtained from a group of epilepsy patients. In the direction parallel to the skull EEG and MEG accuracy are comparable. For source localization, the EEG can be as accurate as MEG can, if individual conductivity values are supplied.

Minimum-norm cortical source estimation in layered head models is robust against skull conductivity error☆☆☆
The conductivity profile of the head has a major effect on EEG signals, but unfortunately the conductivity for the most important compartment, skull, is only poorly known. In dipole modeling studies, errors in modeled skull conductivity have been considered to have a detrimental effect on EEG source estimation. However, as dipole models are very restrictive, those results cannot be generalized ...
متن کاملCombining EEG and MEG for the Reconstruction of Epileptic Activity Using a Calibrated Realistic Volume Conductor Model
To increase the reliability for the non-invasive determination of the irritative zone in presurgical epilepsy diagnosis, we introduce here a new experimental and methodological source analysis pipeline that combines the complementary information in EEG and MEG, and apply it to data from a patient, suffering from refractory focal epilepsy. Skull conductivity parameters in a six compartment finit...
متن کاملCombined EEG/MEG source analysis using cali- brated finite element head models
We propose a new method for a combined MEG/EEG source analysis. We optimize the tissue conductivities of a realistically shaped four-compartment finite-element head volume conductor based on measured somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and fields (SEF). Our proposed method uses the source parameters from the MEG dipole fit as a constraint for the conductivity estimation based on the EEG. The ...
متن کاملA study of dipole localization accuracy for MEG and EEG using a human skull phantom.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the accuracy of forward and inverse techniques for EEG and MEG dipole localization. DESIGN AND METHODS A human skull phantom was constructed with brain, skull and scalp layers and realistic relative conductivities. Thirty two independent current dipoles were distributed within the 'brain' region and EEG and MEG data collected separately for each dipole. The true dipol...
متن کاملIncorporating and Compensating Cerebrospinal Fluid in Surface-Based Forward Models of Magneto- and Electroencephalography
MEG/EEG source imaging is usually done using a three-shell (3-S) or a simpler head model. Such models omit cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that strongly affects the volume currents. We present a four-compartment (4-C) boundary-element (BEM) model that incorporates the CSF and is computationally efficient and straightforward to build using freely available software. We propose a way for compensating t...
